Location

Thermopolis is located at the junction of Highways 120 and 20, south of Cody, Wyoming and close to the northern end of the Wind River Canyon.

Any hunger will be abated at any one of the great restaurants in Thermopolis. From fine dining to fast food, you’ll find it here. Homemade dishes are a treat, and of course, you can’t pass up the traditional hamburger or steak feasts you’ll find. From Chinese, to Tex-Mex or Italian, you’ll discover delicious cuisine, with friendly service.

Accommodations in Thermopolis are comfortable and offer a wide array of amenities to fit your needs. Find a historical building with wonderful fireplaces in some rooms, hot mineral spas and/or Continental breakfasts. Get lodging with views of wildlife wandering close and places to barbeque outside. If you’ve brought your RV you can get some large pull-through sites in one of the local RV Parks. You’ll find the lodging you desire close to town but still with river floats, fishing and other fun nearby.

Activities

Since Thermopolis is ringed by mountains, which include the Owl Creek Mountains, the Bridger Mountains, the Big Horns and the southern Absaroka Range, the visitor has so many recreational opportunities, it’s difficult to decide what to do first.

Fishing has never been better, with the Big Horn River a blue-ribbon trout fishery. You can also venture up into the high mountain streams to try your luck. The trails offer some wonderful scenery as you go hiking, biking or horseback riding into the backcountry. Big game and bird hunting also attracts many to these parts.

You’ll have an adventure if you go for some whitewater rafting through Wind River Canyon. The Grades 4 and 5 demand some experience. But a quiet float on the Big Horn River is also possible. If you prefer lakeside amusements, you can go boating or water skiing at Boysen State Park.

    Of all the attractions, this state park is the favorite. These natural hot springs are famous for their mineral-laden waters. Bison often roam around the landscape. Admission is free, which makes it easy to stop by on your visit.
  • Legend Rock Petroglyph Site
    Only 30 miles from Thermopolis, this is a popular stop where you can see fossils that are nearly 2,000 years old.
  • Wyoming Dinosaur Center
    At the Wyoming Dinosaur Center you’ll travel back in time and see interactive displays and a preparation lab where you can observe. Kids love the life-sized dinosaurs.
  • Hot Springs County Museum and Cultural Center
    Enjoy early history when you browse the Indian artifacts and geological displays. Discover memorabilia from local pioneers.

Getting Here

To get to Cody, Wyoming from Thermopolis is simple. Take the scenic WY Highway 120 to US 14 that takes you into the center of Cody. It’s about 84 miles or an hour and 22-minute drive.
